UTAH GROUND-WATER INFORMATION LIST
The purpose of this site is to make the vast amount of Utah ground water related
data more readily accessible so that academic, government, and private sector
ground-water professionals can easily locate specific data. A secondary purpose
is to alert these same professionals to the existence of the many Utah ground
water related resources available to them through the Internet. This site also
includes contact information for the various agencies and groups that participate
in Utah ground water related activities. It is our hope that bringing these
resources together will aid in the continuation and efficiency of ground water
related work in Utah. This site was created by the joint effort of the Utah
Geological Survey, The Utah Division of Water Resources, and the Utah Division
of Water Rights. It is hosted and maintained by the Utah Division of Water Resources
and updates are planned annually.
For convenience this site is divided into
five sections
1. Federal
government resources
2. State government resources
3. County and local governments resources
4. Academic Institutions
5. Other ground-water organizations resources.
Each of these sections is further divided into specific type of resource with
the accompanying link or links.

Utah Division
of Water Quality
The purpose of the division is to protect, maintain and enhance the quality
of Utah's surface and underground waters for appropriate beneficial uses; and
to protect the public health through eliminating and
preventing water related health hazards which can occur as a result of improper
disposal
of human, animal or industrial wastes while giving reasonable consideration
to the economic impact.
The Ground Water Protection Section of the Division of Water Quality administers
two programs authorized by the Utah Water Quality Act: the state-mandated Utah
Ground Water Quality Protection Program http://www.waterquality.utah.gov/GroundWater/index.htm
and the federally-mandated Utah 1422 Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program
http://www.waterquality.utah.gov/UIC/index.htm.
Utah adopted an anti-degradation ground water protection policy in August 1989
to maintain and protect current and future beneficial uses of Utah's ground
water resources. This policy recognizes that there are some effects to ground
water from man's activities and limits those effects to acceptable levels. The
primary task of the Ground Water Quality Protection Program is the issuance
and enforcement of ground water quality discharge permits to minimize impacts
to ground water quality for facilities that would probably result in a discharge
of pollutants directly or indirectly into ground water.
Other important tasks include:

The UIC Program was mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act to protect underground
sources of drinking water (USDW) from endangerment by subsurface emplacement
of fluids. The Utah Division of Water Quality, received primacy from EPA on
February 10, 1983 to administer the UIC program in Utah under section 1422 of
the Safe Drinking Water Act for Class I, III, IV and V wells. In Utah, the UIC
program under section 1425 of the Safe Drinking Water Act for Class II injection
wells is administered by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining. Please contact
Gilbert Hunt at (801) 538-5297 or gilhunt@utah.gov for information regarding
Class II injection wells in Utah. Facilities regulated under the Utah UIC Program
are permitted by rule under the Utah Ground Water Quality Protection Program.
